Minumental 33

Minumentals is back! The Art Academy of Cincinnati is happy to announce Minumental 33. The exhibit consists of hundreds of small artworks, all 2 inches or less in any dimension, and features work from Art Academy students, faculty, staff and alumni varying in a wide range of media. I always try to make something for this show. It kicks off in January, which makes the perfect project to get me out of a creative rut right after the end of the year.

The ones above are what I created and submitted this year! I chose for all the proceeds to go to the Art Academy Scholarship fund.

They’re made from embroidery floss and ink on fabric stretched over homesote board.

I’ve been playing around with this media for a while and will hopefully be exploring more ways to create pieces like this!

Tarot card sketches

I’ve wanted to design my own tarot cards for a while now. However, 78 detailed illustrations seem intimidating!

Recently, starting a new sketchbook inspired me to finally rough sketch out a few. Which ones should I do next?

WallPaper Samples

I have to admit, if I see an art supply that I LOVE but don’t know what to do with right away, I buy it and store it away in my supply stash. You know what I mean??

When I saw this wallpaper sample book from one of my favorite local art supply stores, Indigo Hippo, I HAD to get it for future use. The woven textures and natural colors instantly caught my eye and it has that earthy vibe I always love.

It’s been a lonnnnng while since I looked at this sample book. I revisited it while cleaning and finally figured out what I would do with it! I’ve been wanting to make more home decor pieces and artwork for our house.

I came across an old IKEA frame that had an art print in it that we used to have hanging up. I decided to upcycle the set and make a new piece by making a mandala-like collage using the wallpaper sample pages from the book.

I normally sketch out what a piece will look like, but this time I felt the need to create this intuitively.

I explored the medium by cutting and placing a couple different versions. I love taking all the steps in the process. The two images below are versions I played with before choosing a final direction.

After shifting things around and rearranging it for a couple days, I stopped on a place that felt right and glued the pieces down. Here’s what the final piece looks like framed and up close!

I enjoyed this so much and was already planning on creating more. I plan to use frames we already have and keep going on collages using these paper samples.

Not sure where to hang this particular piece yet but I’m excited to add a couple more in the house using this material!

Christmas Cards

I try to design the Christmas card we send out every year. This year I wanted to really play around with the bright colors of the season! We got dressed up and took our own photos at home with a makeshift tripod :). Although it’s been a tough year, looking back at this card makes me smile and it reminds me how grateful I am for our little crew.

Words of Wisdom Community Gallery Show

I’ve been wanting to participate in the AIGA Cincinnati Words of Wisdom Show for a while now and I finally pushed passed my comfort zone, put myself out there and entered two pieces this year! This event was back in March, however, showing in more community shows is something that’s been on my mind lately and I thought I’d share.

Below are a few pictures from the event. I also bought the “Climb Your Waterfall” print shown. I loved the detail yet simplicity of the linear illustration of the Koi fish swimming in the waves. Once, I discovered the artist’s (Lianna McKenzie) statement on the back stating, “As a symbol of strength and resilience, Koi fish are determined to persevere upstream. Despite how impossible the journey may seem, we as women know we must work harder, be stronger and be courageous as we navigate the world”, I was reminded to push through fear and keep going no matter what the circumstance. It resonated with me at a much needed time and I was happy to have stumbled upon it at the show.
